V-Drive servo worm gearheads: Upgrade and extended portfolio

From October 10 to 13, 2016, WITTENSTEIN alpha will take advantage of the Stuttgart Motek to unveil its extended portfolio of servo worm gearheads in the V-Drive series. “Whispering gearhead”, “lightweight” – both of these terms are an apt description of the newly developed V-Drive Basic, which will be available in two sizes straight away. Parallel to this, the other two worm gearhead versions in the series have undergone a technological upgrade, for example with regard to torque and

torsional backlash: V-Drive eco has become V-Drive Value while V-Drive+ provided the inspiration for the new V-Drive Advanced. Thanks to this combination of product innovation and portfolio maintenance, WITTENSTEIN alpha can in future offer suitable solutions for any specified torsional backlash greater than 2 arcmin in the market for servo worm gearheads.

The enhanced performance of the existing gearheads and the creation of a new V-Drive Basic product give WITTENSTEIN alpha a coherent and comprehensive portfolio of worm gearheads that meet all current and future market requirements – both technical and commercial – very efficiently.

V-Drive Basic: Superior efficiency, superior running, superior economy
The V-Drive Basic will ease WITTENSTEIN’s access to the market for price sensitive applications involving servo worm gearheads with no high-end requirements in respect of the maximum torsional backlash. Sizes 50 and 63 will be offered initially as well as two standard output types, namely hollow or solid shaft, with a total of five different reduction ratios. At just 7.4 kg and 12 kg respectively, the V-Drive is definitely a lightweight: the smaller mass helps save energy when the gearhead is used in moving machine axes. A torsional backlash from 10 arcmin to greater than 15 arcmin is specified for all models. The special design and geometry of the VDrive Basic’s teeth not only provide high speed reserves and efficiency; they also make the servo worm gearhead very quiet and smooth-running, with a maximum of 65 dBA at full load and no more than 50 dBA – a mere “whisper” – at medium speeds. Designed for ambient temperatures between -15°C and +40°C and featuring IP64 protection, the V-Drive Basic is exceptionally robust for this market segment. The new servo worm gearhead is additionally available as a corrosion resistant version with a nickel plated, cast aluminium housing and stainless steel motor mounting components for particularly harsh operating conditions. If higher axial forces are likely in the application, stronger bearings can be supplied for the VDrive Basic as an option. The expected delivery time is equally impressive: following the market launch, V-Drive Basic gearheads will be ready to ship within a few working days.

V-Drive Value and V-Drive Advanced offer even more performance
The V-Drive Value and V-Drive Advanced upgrade versions are fully compatible with the proven V-Drive eco and V-Drive+ but with improved performance parameters. Apart from the extra torque – about twenty percent more – it is the significantly lower torsional backlash that is especially convincing: only 6 arcmin with the V-Drive Value (V-Drive eco: 8 arcmin) and 2 arcmin with the V-Drive Advanced (V-Drive+: 3 arcmin). The optimized design of the input seal moreover guarantees both of these V-Drive versions a service life exceeding 15,000 operating hours – 25% to 50% better than the current market standard.

V-Drive: The portfolio for any performance needs
Automated linear modules, feed axes and assembly cells, handling axes and belt drives in the food processing and packaging industries, tool changers and turntables for machine tools or cutting machines for textiles are just a few of the applications for which servo worm gearheads are typically used. With its three different variants – Basic, Value and Advanced – the WITTENSTEIN alpha VDrive portfolio provides exactly the right performance for each axis.
